Is your team focused on practice challenges, on dwindling insurance reimbursement, on lack of patients, or low collections? If so, you will continue to experience more of the same. Why? Because whatever you focus on E-X-P-A-N-D-S.
The good news is, you can choose to focus on the positives, causing those to expand instead. Focus on what’s working in your practice, on your successes, on your current clients who stay, pay and refer.
While the movie The Secret popularized the Law of Attraction, the concept is certainly nothing new. Michael Losier defines it as: “You attract into your life whatever you give your attention, energy and focus to, whether positive or negative.”
If your CAs concentrate on the patients who are non-compliant–the ones with problems keeping their appointments, who continually run a balance, who are constantly complaining–what do you think you’ll attract into your practice? Instead, train your team to focus on those patients who keep their appointments, who commit to corrective and wellness care, who choose to prepay for care, and who refer others to your practice.
What is your team’s reaction when there are 5 new patients scheduled in the evening? Excited about the difference you’re making? The miracles that might be created? Or crabby over the thought of getting out of the office late. Which will matter a year from now? The mindset and attitude of your team are critical to the success of your practice.
There has actually been a Gallup opinion poll to determine if Americans prefer to be around positive or negative people. Lo and behold, 99% of us prefer to be around positive people (and someone actually paid for this study). So, what implications does this have for your practice? The more positive you and your CAs are, the more patients will be drawn to you.
There are so many examples of the law of attraction in your office. Consider how many times you’ve stopped to think about a patient you haven’t seen in months and they actually come in that same day. Alternatively, think about a time when your office collections were low; if you continued to focus on the unpaid bills, that’s all you got more of–yuck!
Rather than speaking negatively about the economy of your community, start noticing the successful businesses in your area. Pay attention to the line at Starbucks, the full parking lot at Whole Foods, the fabulous restaurant that is hard to get into. And also notice that there is no insurance coverage for lattes, organic produce or dinner out.

However, when we focused on referrals, one team member had 14 outside referrals in two weeks! When we focused on appointment systems, our scheduled appointments and patient volume increased by 10% three weeks in a row! When we focused on appreciating our favorite patients, our new patients doubled! Again, that’s without any changes in procedure at all.
Your CAs will grasp that their mindset and attitude are key. Ask yourself how much it would be worth for your team to learn:
